48 people killed in Mpeketoni town attack

LAMU, KENYA: Police have confirmed
at least 48 people dead in
Mpeketoni, Lamu County following
an attack by gunmen last night and
warned the toll could rise.
Other witnesses say there are more
than 30 people who died in the
attack by gunmen believed to be Al-
shabaab from Somalia.

Kimaiyo said among those confirmed
dead so far is a police driver. The
deceased officer was a driver to
Lamu County commander.
“We are going there to witness but
the situation is not good for now.
The toll could be more than the 48
bodies that we have collected,” said
Kimaiyo on phone.
Mpeketoni town is about 40
kilometres inland in Lamu County
and the attack was not a surprise.
Police have been mobilised to collect
the bodies and police boss David
Kimaiyo says there were about 50
gunmen who struck the town with
explosives and guns attacking two
hotels, a bank, police station and
other structures.
"They came in as passengers in the
quiet town. No arrests have been
made," Kimaiyo said adding that
police still collecting bodies. Britain
had closed its consulate in Mombasa
on Friday over terror fears.

"We are yet to know if they were Al-
Shabaab militants but so far we
have 48 bodies including a police
officer. Our officers on the ground
are collecting more which indicates
the toll could rise," said Kimaiyo.
Mpeketoni is now like a ghost town
as many residents are missing and
there is more gunfire being
witnessed. Witnesses said many
people were held hostage for hours
in the attack that started at about 8
pm and ran for almost four hours.
The area is a tourist hub and the
attack is a blow in the already
struggling sector.

Four people dead and several others injured in Nabukoi accident

Eldoret, Kenya: Four people have
been killed in an accident involving
a bus and a trailer in Nabukoi area
along Nairobi-Eldoret road.
The bus was coming from Kampala
while the trailer was travelling on
the opposite direction when the
accident happened. Police say the
two vehicles clashed as the trailer
overtook another vehicle. Among
those who died was the driver and
three passangers and dozens are in
hospital.
Police have urged caution to
motorists using the Nairobi-Naivasha
highway because of the fog. Traffic
police say the road’s visibility is
poor and want drivers to turn their
lights on and drive slowly.
Traffic police have been stationed in
the area to direct vehicles.

S.A President Zuma admitted to hospital

Johannesburg - President Jacob
Zuma was admitted to hospital for
tests on Saturday, the presidency
said.
“President Jacob Zuma has today,
June 7, 2014, been admitted to
hospital for tests,” his spokesman
Mac Maharaj said in a statement.
“Yesterday President Zuma was
advised to rest following a
demanding election and transition
programme to the new
administration.”
Maharaj said doctors were satisfied
with Zuma's condition.
He did not say which hospital the
president had been admitted to.
On Friday, the ANC national officials
ordered Zuma to take a break.
“Following a gruelling election
campaign we found that he needed
to rest,” the deputy president Cyril
Ramaphosa said at the Nehawu
special congress in Benoni, on the
East Rand.
“He attended the NEC lekgotla this
morning, and was thereafter sent
packing to go and rest.”
Zuma was scheduled to address the
National Education, Health and
Allied Workers Union congress, but
sent Ramaphosa to deliver his
speech.
ANC secretary general Gwede
Mantashe told reporters at the
ruling party's lekgotla in Irene,
outside Pretoria that the president
was exhausted.
He said Zuma was given time to
recover before he held a Cabinet
lekgotla next week.

Police Find 5 Dead Babies In Basement

Finnish police have arrested a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of manslaughter after finding five dead babies in an apartment building, authorities said Wednesday.
Officers found the bodies in “badly smelly packages” Tuesday in a basement cupboard of an apartment building in the western city of Oulu after they were alerted to the scene by emergency services.

“A woman arrived there as officers had begun their investigation, saying she had put the packages into the cupboard,” Det. Supt. Seppo Leinonen told the AP. “She said she’d given birth to the stillborn babies between five and 10 years ago at home.”
Leinonen said the woman couldn’t give a clear motive for keeping and storing what he said appeared to be fetuses for so long.
He declined to identify her except to say that she was a local Finnish woman, married with children, who had moved into an apartment in the building in Oulu, about 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of Helsinki, a few months earlier. He said no other family members were suspected of being involved.
