The safe period refers to the
window period where a woman is
less likely to get pregnant if they
have unprotected intercourse.
Technically speaking, this safe
period falls between day 1-7 of the
period and Day 19 to the start of
the next cycle
The normal woman’s menstrual
cycle is supposed to last 28 days.
Of these only days 8 to 19 are
considered fertile i.e. a woman is
likely to have a baby through
unprotected intercourse, all other
days are safe. The cycle is
considered to begin with the first
day of bleeding and ends when
the bleeding starts again.
Opting to have sex during the ‘safe
period’ isn’t fool-proof though. A
lot of women have irregular cycles
and the cycle length can vary from
women to women. That’s why the
so-called ‘safe period’ is in truth
not that safe and it’s better to use
condoms or other contraceptive
methods like the oral pill to
prevent unwanted pregnancies.

73,000 HIV positive in Kisii: SHOCKING!!!

At least 73,000 residents of Kisii
County are living with HIV, with only
15 per cent accessing medical
attention, statistics have revealed.
The county is listed alongside
Nairobi, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Mombasa
and Siaya as the hardest hit by the
HIV/Aids pandemic.
Kisii County Medical Director Dr
Geoffrey Otomu said advocacy for
HIV testing for pregnant women and
their partners, attendance of
required ante-natal care services,
promoting health facility skilled
birth delivery and exclusive
breastfeeding for the first six months
should be encouraged.
“Some of the children have
undergone multiple losses as a
result of the loss of parents and
siblings in close succession, thereby
hampering their growth and
development and enjoyment of their
childhood and even as they
approach the turbulent years of
teenage hood,” he said.
Speaking recently during the
National Aids Control Council (NACC)
and Kisii County consultative
meeting, County First Lady Elizabeth
Ongwae said her office had formed a
non-governmental organisation
dubbed Soma Support Project.
This will partner with Timiza Trust
Initiative, a community-based
organisation that is implementing
Wezesha, a USAid-funded project
that targets orphaned and
vulnerable children (OVCs) in Kisii.
According to Ms Ongwae, the group
has identified 252 primary schools
and 50 secondary schools where they
are offering counselling to OVCs and
children living with HIV/Aids.
The National Demographic and
Health Survey 2011 indicated that
Kisii has 5,480 new HIV infections
annually.

Brazil takes advantage of World Cup crowds to test for HIV

Sao Paulo: Brazilian health officials
handed out condoms to World Cup
fans in Sao Paulo on Friday and took
advantage of festivities in the city to
test people for HIV.
"We can't miss an opportunity like
this," said Ivone De Paula, Sao Paulo
state's coordinator for sexually
transmitted disease prevention. "The
fact that it's the Cup lightens the
mood a bit. People say 'Hey I'm
going to watch the game, I'm having
fun, why not get tested too?'"
The program, part of the UNAIDS
"Protect the Goal" HIV/AIDS
prevention program, provides rapid
HIV testing and counseling, as well
as free condoms and emergency
retroviral drugs. It is also being
offered in 11 other cities across Sao
Paulo state where visiting World Cup
teams are based.
De Paula expected the program to
conduct about 300 rapid HIV tests
outside Friday's Fan Fest, where a
giant screen displayed the Cameroon
vs Mexico match. Many were getting
tested for the first time ever, she
said.
"I had no idea this was going to be
here, I just came across it," said a
middle-aged man who asked not to
be identified. "I wouldn't know
where to get tested otherwise, so
this helps quite a lot."
Brazil usually conducts HIV and
AIDS prevention campaigns during
the Carnival holiday, including
widespread advertising and condom
distribution. Aggressive HIV/AIDS
treatment and prevention efforts in
the South American country have
been held up as a model for the
developing world for more than a
decade.
